DISCOVERING CASALE MONFERRATO
2. DISCOVERING CASALE MONFERRATO (half-day)
Casale Monferrato, the capital of Monferrato
Casale Monferrato, along with Acqui Terme and Asti, is the most important city in Monferrato, a territory that became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. The title of “capital of Monferrato” is not just an honorary title; it also has a historical basis. In fact, between the 15th and 16th centuries, it became the capital of the Marchesato del Monferrato due to its strategic location on the border with the Po Valley. During this period, especially thanks to the Gonzaga family, Casale became one of the most prestigious centres in Europe and adorned itself with splendid architecture. This prestige is still easily observable during a stroll through its streets, rich with beautiful palaces, churches, arcades, and squares.
Casale boasts a long wine-making tradition, especially linked to the production of Grignolino, a light and spicy red wine. But not only Grignolino: the Freisa di Casale and the Cortese dell’Alto Monferrato are two other wines that tell the story and tradition of this land.
